Derek Friend B.A. (Hons), M.A., LL.B., LL.M.


Education and Background

Derek Friend earned a Bachelor of Arts degree (Honours) from the University of Winnipeg, a Master of Arts degree from York University, a Bachelor of Laws Degree from Dalhousie University and a Master of Laws degree from Osgoode Hall Law School. He started his legal career as a lawyer in Barrie in 1991 with J. Robert MacKinnon. In 1992, J. Robert MacKinnon was appointed as a Judge, so Derek continued both his and MacKinnon’s legal practices, establishing his own law firm in 1998.

Derek has training as a mediator and in the area of collaborative family law, and he regularly attends continuing legal education seminars and makes public presentations on a variety of legal topics.

Professional Affiliations and Memberships

Derek holds many professional affiliations, including membership with the Canadian Bar Association, the Simcoe County Family Law Lawyers’ Association, the Simcoe County Alternative Dispute Resolution Association, the Advocates Society, and Collaborative Practice Simcoe County. Additionally, he is third vice president of the Simcoe County Law Association and serves as a director of the Cognashene Cottagers Association. He has been a Director of the Penetanguishene Chamber of Commerce, Director and President of Community Living Huronia and President of the Community Living Huronia Foundation and serves on other local committees. Derek is an active boater and is a member of Penetanguishene’s Coast Guard Auxiliary (Search and Rescue). He has also coached local sports teams.
